Some things
More on the Urban Trawl blog: several things which have previously been on here, mostly on Thames Estuary nonplaces, but with one new thing on the Metropolitan County of the West Midlands. More to come soon, hopefully.
Also - with a nod to the Portakabin-sponsored Kosmograd - a piece in Frieze, thinking aloud about prefab, and a Guardian column about the exemplary bit of Non-Plan that is 'London Luton'.
Links and more details for the talks/walks mentioned below: in Sheffield next week (here and here) and a bit later, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Bristol, Cardiff. No link as yet for the Glasgow talk, but it will be at the Glasgow Film Theatre on May 5 at 11.30am, as part of a 'study day' entitled 'What Good Are The Arts' (yes, John Carey is involved...); and also Milton Keynes, twice - once here on the 16th May, once here on the 26th May. And will be talking on Marxism Today at the NFT very soon, and on Stirling a little while later, at Tate Britain on June 11.

I'm happy that I inspired a decent article from you about prefabrication and mass-produced housing. My tweet about British architecture being haunted by the spectre of Ronan Point was inspired more by looking at the cover of St. Etienne's Finisterre album than trying to promote Portakabin - I don't really have that grand a plan, and I've no idea where Portakabin found out about me.
I certainly wouldn't say I was 'wedded' to the prospect of instant cities. If the Kosmograd blog is married to any city concept, it is distributed cities, and the disurbanist vision of Okhitovich.
Back to prefab - I think almost every 'high-tech' architect has a modular construction system designed in a prototype form. Hopkins own house in Hampstead, built in 1978 seems a prime example. It has always surprised me that no one seem to have been able to realise them as commercial ventures, and as you say, it is the student housing developers pushing their own version of system building that are leading the way. At the other end of the spectrum we have the horrendous cliche of the shipping container project, with the likes of Boxpark and all those that came before it - I've got a folder full of them.
