Been away in The Capital Of Europe for a week, and a post or several about this experience should be on the way soon, but in the interim, here's a shortish piece for 3:AM on Verso's Radical Thinkers series. In terms of the praxis/talking question, the Climate Camp have set up er, camp on the heath where the revolting peasants used to assemble before descending upon the capital - and about a ten minute walk from my flat. I shall most certainly be partaking as soon as I get all the deadlines I accumulated over the holiday out of the way, but you should certainly take a look at this list of discussion topics, via the Blackheath Bugle - an extensive, fascinating and interestingly contradictory selection there, with a talk on stopping coal mining next to a meeting celebrating women's role in the miners' strike. Possibly most curious of all is the topic 'Composting the Capitalist State – how we can, why we must'. The Socialist Lavatory League may have to attend to give the case against the Earth Closet.

Owen - if The Socialist Lavatory League doesn't exist in real life, I shall be extremely disappointed.

If it doesn't, it should be invented. Thanks for the link Mr H... Your blog is as brilliant as ever.

The Socialist Lavatory League counted among its members the late, great Kenneth Tynan, who dreamed it into existence on 6 November 1973. From the Diaries:

During the night I have a dream in which I join a subversive organisation called the Socialist Lavatory League. Its purpose is to bring all private loos into public ownership. Everyone will have thr right to use anyone else's loo, which will mean the end of private peeing. The dream wakes me up giggling, but on consideration I don't think it is at all that bad an idea.'

From such acorns, comrades...

i really liked it. perhaps because it's so flat in the netherlands that they don't have this handwringing over 'the view' being spoilt, they're inventive with the buildings that are put up.

the netherlands beyond amsterdam was very rewarding. utrecht (even though i stopped there for only half an hour) had a very interesting station as well - it was somewhere between birmingham new street and peterborough...

(im very much an arcitecture amateur, so i may well have witnessed a load of rubbish)

Brilliant blog. I am not sure if I am for or against the lavatory scheme!
