Vanity Corner

Icon reviews Militant Modernism - a 'sparky, polemical and ferociously learned book', apparently. Also, I forgot to link to PD Smith's review in the Guardian. By this point it's surely due a kicking from someone. In a similar vein: me defending blogs, against a slagging of the blog-becomes-book format from Stephen Howe - which then received a surprisingly sympathetic response...

The publishers thought it would sell about 4 copies, so the (entirely relative) demand means they had to print a load more up, and they're taking ages to be delivered to Amazon, but I think a few hundred have just been sent out. Possibly.

Anyway, you may have a fair few bones to pick with it...fairly unrepentant defence of Modernist town planning and all...

Howe's point about the 'wretched of the earth' is pretty ridiculous... as if there are tons of books coming out of the shanty towns.

Still waiting for your book to show up in Australia too... the book stores consulted say it appears as 'not yet published' on their databases. I guess what you say about the initial print run explains it. No remainders tables for you, congrats!

Good work. The Brecht/Beckett chapter still a bit sketchy and the opposition feels forced; perhaps the essay could be expanded. [The tendency to label a "Good" modernism vs a "Bad" modernism seems simplistic here. Brecht & Beckett have too much in common — especially in light of your thesis — to set up this dichotomy.]

Otherwise, a refreshing take on the subject of social housing. Hopefully it will prod some attempts to think about alternatives again.
