Book

Is out in one month. I haven't got any copies yet myself so still don't quite believe that it ever will come out, but 24th April is the official date. There will be some sort of launch or other nearer the time, when I shall be plugging the thing with increasing desperation - but until then, it can be purchased on Amazon, for an astonishing £2.50 less than the £10 asking price. Gift-wrap is  apparently available.

There was, of course, no connection between this post and its "Magic and Production" succesor, in which I saw the germ of a defence of of intellectual property rights as being to secure the full fruit of their labour for workers by brain!

If I was feeling truly tight, my personal challenge would be to repeat my last Amazon bargain-hunting triumph - I picked up a former housemate's first book half-price a fortnight before publication date.

The publisher was remarkably profligate with review copies which went straight to the second hand market. (They were perversely parsimonious with author's comps which would probably have been distributed to more favourable bloggers and done more for sales!)

Good luck. It is strange how after a decade and more of electronic publication, you first "real" book is still a major event. Fom my mate's experience, it wasn't quite as stressful as first time fatherhood, but came damn close.

Well, I didn't get an advance, so every copy helps...

I wish I could buy it from you directly. The idea of you getting some small bit of royalty from my purchase irks me. Maybe I should buy one from Amazon (even paying the I'm-sure-it'll-be-stupidly-expensive postage from the UK to the US) then ALSO do some sort of payment to you. Like maybe crochet you a scarf. Out of plastic bags. That I find. By the road. While on a dérive. What do you think?

Certainly you can do both!

I would, you know, clean the plastic bags before shredding them into "yarn". A scarf redolent of the gutters, while maybe having artistic merit, would be not-so-appealing as an actual garment.

Maybe I'll pick up some particularly interesting plastic bags when I go to Central Asia next month....
